Title :  PHENOL ANTIOXIDANT QUANTITY AND QUALITY IN FOODS: VEGETABLES
Abstract :      Fruits and vegetables in the diet have been found in epidemiology studies to be protective against several chronic diseases. Epidemiological evidence suggests that flavonoid consumption in the diet is protective against heart disease. Vegetables had antioxidant quality comparable to that of pure flavonols and were superior to vitamin antioxidants. The phenol antioxidant index, measuring both the quantity and the quality of antioxidants present, was used to evaluate 23 vegetables. Isolated lower density lipoproteins from plasma spiked with two vegetable extracts were enriched with phenol antioxidants and showed decreased oxidizability.

Title :  IMPACT OF OILS RICH IN MONO AND POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS ON HYPERLIPIDEMICS
Abstract :      Thirty-two hyper-lipidemic subjects in the age group of 30 to 50 years were selected and divided into four groups of 8 each. For the experimental groups, I, II and III consisting of eight subjects each, sunflower oil (Helianthus annus) (SURYAVARTA) oil were substituted for the oils normally consumed and compared with a control (Group IV) of eight subjects who were not substituted with any oil. A positive correlation between age, coffee consumption, alcohol consumption and hyper-lpidemia was found. The results indicate that groundnut (rich in monounsaturated fatty acids) brought about significant reduction in all the lipid fractions unlike sun flower and Gingelly oils (TILA TAILAM) (both rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids) which brought about changes only in total cholesterol levels. Significant changes in body mass indices were also seen in the groundnut oil group. Serum cholesterol levels were reduced to the maximum by sunflower oil followed by groundnut oil and then Gingelly oil. These results indicate that unsaturated fatty acids lower the serum lipid levels.

Title :  ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND TOTAL PHENOLICS IN SELECTED FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND GRAIN PRODUCTS
Abstract :      The antioxidant activities and total phenolics of 28 plant products, including sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, wheat germ, buck wheat, and several fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants were determined. The total phenolic content, determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method, varied from 169 to 10548 mg/100 g of dry product. Antioxidant activity of methanolic extract evaluated according to the beta-carotene bleaching method expressed as AOX (deltalog A170/min), AA (percent inhibition relative to control), ORR (oxidation rate ratio), and AAC (antioxidant activity coefficient) ranged from 0.05, 53.7, 0.009 and 51.7 to 0.26, 99.1, 0.46, respectively. The correlation coefficient between total phenolics and antioxidative activities was statistically significant.

Title :  ABSENCE OF IN VIVO MUTAGENIC POTENCY OF HEATED AND FRIED OILS IN MICE
Abstract :      The mutagenic potency of peanut (Archis hypogaea) (BHUCHANAKA), sesame (Sesamum indicum) (TILA) and coconut (Cocos nucifera) (NARIKELA) oils was studied employing two in vivo mammalian assays, viz., bone marrow micronucleus assay and the sperm morphology assay in albino mice. In the bone marrow micronucleus assay oral doses of fresh, heated and fried oils (7.5 ml and 30.0 ml/kg body weight) did not induce any increase in the incidence of micro-nucleated polychromatic erythrocytes. Intra-gastric administration of oils at the highest dose (30.0 ml/kg body weight/day) for 5 consecutive days in male mice did not produce any morphological effect either on the testicular or epididymal weights and histology. No significant alterations were observed in the caudal sperm counts any of the sampling intervals and also there was no treatment related increase in the incidence of sperm head abnormalities.

Title :  ANTIOXIDANT DIETARY FIBER PRODUCT: A NEW CONCEPT AND A POTENTIAL FOOD INGREDIENT.
Abstract :      The main characteristics of a natural product, antioxidant dietary fiber (ADF), rich in both dietary fiber (DF) and polyphenoic compounds (PP), obtained from red grape pomade are described. Both non-extractable proanthocyanidins (28.6%) and extractable polyphenols (2%) are associated with the dietary fiber matrix. The antioxidant capacity of this product was in vitro determined by lipid oxidation inhibition (LOI) and free radical scavenging (FRE) procedures. One gram of the product showed similar LOI and FRE effect than 400 mg and 100mg of DL- (alpha-tocopherol), respectively. Extractable PP of grape ADF showed higher antioxidant capacity than red wine PP. The physiological and nutritional significance of ADF is discussed.

Sleeplessness - Ayurveda Home Remedy

Some times due to over tiredness or for some other reason we suffer with sleeplessness. The chemical pills taken for sleep form habit and cause dependency. After some time we need to take more tablets. Hence it is better use Ayurveda medicines. Here we have one good remedy available in our home. Mix 3-4 camphor tablets in 20 ml of Coconut oil.  Apply few drops of oil over the feet and rub gently. Within no time we get sleep and complete rest. If the oil is rubbed by others the medicine works more efficiently. JGD


 కొన్ని సార్లు అలసట వలన   లేక  మరి ఇతర కారణాలవలన మనకు నిద్ర రాక ఇబ్బందిపడుతున్టాము. నిద్ర కొరకు వాడే కెమికల్ మందులు అలవాటుగా మారతాయి. కొన్ని రోజులకు ఆ మాత్రలు ఎక్కువ మోతాదు వాడాల్సి వస్తుంది. ఇంట్లో ఉండే 3-4 కర్పూరము బిళ్ళలు 20 మి .లీ. కొబ్బరి నూనె లో కలిపి 2-3 చుక్కల నునేను అరికాళ్ళపై రుద్దాలి. వెంటనే  నిద్ర పడుతుంది. మర్దనా ఇతరులు చేసిన ఫలితము ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది. Hiccups - Simple Ayurveda Remedy with Mint

Some times hiccups suffer a lot. In elders it is more suffering. Take 5-6 fresh Mint leaves and add with a small piece of Crystal sugar and chew slowly. The hiccups are subsided slowly. JGD
